Melaka Alive

Melaka Alive is a project that aims to present the past of Melaka in 5D. In other words, it is a cultural performance that tells the history of Melaka as it originally should, from Parameswara to The Malaccan Sultanate to the times of Portuguese occupation through live theatre performance.

The Melaka Alive stage is located nearby the well-famed Porta de Santiago and directly opposite the Proclamation of Independence Memorial.

 photo IMG_9140_zpsm1okvztz.jpg

This is the stage. A ship inspired stage.

 photo IMG_20150306_193944_zpshtuzwoto.jpg

A closer look on Bahtera Merdeka where the Melaka Alive Cultural Performance is staged. We were was told that there will be a few more stage performance that will bring history alive across the famous locations in Melaka; the ruins of Porta de Santiago and The Christ Church in the Dutch Square, but for now it’s just The Ship, Bahtera Merdeka.

 photo IMG_9152_zpsva9kq6an.jpg

Upon entering, you’ll be greeted by the casts who are already fully costumed. They will lead you to board the ship. This is where you’ll feel that you have just stepped into a time machine, where you were brought into Melaka of the past.

One word of advice; If you are seated in front and the Bahtera Merdeka’s crew hand you a disposable raincoat, you might want to put it on.

 photo IMG-20150201-WA0012_zps1nmfmxus.jpg

There is plenty of realistic rainfalls and ocean tide’s splashes throughout the show. The one that I watched was called ‘The Winds of Melaka’

 photo melakaalive_zpsswqnm0iw.jpg

Set on board of the ‘Bahtera Merdeka’, the  ship inspired stage, this extravaganza tale of Panglima Awang is brought to life in a play that combines spectacular visuals, effects, music and live acting to tell the story of Melaka’s rich and diverse history, from the establishment of the city by it’s founder Parameswara, to the glorious Melaccan Sultanate to it’s fall into the Portuguese hands. Amongst other things, the performance also highlights the legends of the Mouse Deer and dogs, the arrival of Cheng Ho’s fleet and the coming of de Sequiera and de Albuquerque to the shores of the kingdom.

So what did wethink about the entire Melaka Alive: The Winds of Melaka performance? Fabulous!

Melaka Alive is definitely a must see tourist attraction for all who visit Melaka and Malaysia. Like it’s tagline goes, it is ‘very history, very drama in 5D’. Highly recommended for school trips. It beats studying history from the boring textbooks in school.

Purr-fect time spent at Sanrio Hello Kitty Town

After hearing about it for quite a while now, finally I got to visit the Puteri Harbour Theme Park. The Puteri Harbour Theme Park is a large building – a four storey indoor theme park comprising Sanrio Hello Kitty Town, The Little Big Club and a themed restaurant attraction called Lat’s Place.

I think the Puteri Harbour Theme Park is ideal for young kids, ideally age 10 and below, but out of curiousity, I brought my 10 year old daughter there….

Now I have been a fan of Hello Kitty and My Melody ever since I was a kid too, anyway, who can resist the cute characters of Sanrio?!!

When you enter the Puteri Harbour Theme Park building, you will be greeted by a very bright and attractive cafe, called the Red Bow Cafe with an adorable Hello Kitty bow theme. They serve a myriad of attractive Hello Kitty shaped waffles, sandwiches, snacks and drinks. Definitely very eye catching and looks almost too lovely to eat….

DSC08515

The Sanrio Hello Kitty Town is located on the first floor of this building. It is supposedly the first Sanrio Hello Kitty Town attraction outside of Japan and it consists of various pretty interesting interactive and walk-through activities, which follow the popular Hello Kitty theme.

DSC08529

Do not forget to check the character appearance schedule and show times and try to memorize where you can catch your favourite characters in action

DSC08530

Getting there can be a little confusing, but from the Kuala Lumpur Plus highway Sanrio Hello Kitty Town can be reached by taking exit 253 to Senai Airport and then exit 311 to Kota Iskandar: from this road it is a short drive to Puteri Harbour where the park is located.

Sanrio Hello Kitty Town is situated at Nusajaya. The theme park operates daily from 10:00am – 6:00pm. We were quite amused by the concept of the theme park. It was amazing. My family were having fun exploring the theme park.

DSC08531

The concept attracts both adults and kids. Most of the visitors were naturally families with children. It was a great place for families to spend time and have fun. It was a nice place to take photos too with cutesy Sanrio deco all over.

There are about 6 activities inside, before heading upstairs, the staff will give you a postcard passport. You will have to present this postcard before the start of each activity for stamping.

DSC08534    DSC08539

DSC08542

DSC08544   DSC08546

One of the highlights of Sanrio Hello Kitty Town would have to be Hello Kitty’s house – a guaranteed favourite with little ones.

It is definitely a dream house for kiddies or Hello Kitty fans: from the front door inlaid with pretty rose stained glass, through the kitchen with hand-carved fixings, and on to the cute but flamboyant bedroom, decorated in several shades of yellow and pink.

The lovely blue bathroom with a huge Hello Kitty tub which my daughter wished she had one at home….

You can even take a peek into Hello Kitty’s wardrobe and marvel or complain about the hardness Hello Kitty’s clothings….

You can head over to the Wishful Studio for lots of activities. It is at the Wishful Studio where you can dabble in jewellery making, play dress-up at the photo studio and even visit a nail salon where you can get unique Sanrio-themed nail art.

As you can see here, my little girl and I were at the Cookie Studio where we were given Hello Kitty cookies to decorate as we like then eat it….

DSC08548     DSC08551

Then we got to watch Hello Kitty and her boyfriend Dear Daniel in a musical show at the Purrfect Stage. It was fun and though Hello Kitty’s behavior somewhat reminded me of a K-Pop or J-Pop female artiste, it was fun.

DSC08562    DSC08604

Another main attraction here is the Hello Kitty Black Wonder, an interactive experience where children can help to find Hello Kitty and Dear Daniel who have been kidnapped by Kuromi.

DSC08635   DSC08640

Guests will be given a lamp and they have to find out their secret symbol and five alphabets that would be the password to setting Hello Kitty and Dear Daniel free. It is somewhat like a kiddy version Escape Room where you have to find the clues to unlock the answers.

The attraction uses technology such as sensors and computers to enhance the experience as well as devices to interact with during the mission.

To get the alphabets, you have to look in each different area and find your secret symbol and the alphabet written next to it…

DSC08641   DSC08642

DSC08646   DSC08648

When you have the 5 alphabets, you have to put it together to make a word, and that will be the password, and once you have the password, you will be given a certificate that you have completed your adventure and set Dear Daniel and Hello Kitty free…

Things to do while there:

Make sure you read their show schedule, so that you do not miss out on their show, though they will actually announce the show 10 minutes before it starts.
Do not forget to take a picture with all the Sanrio characters as well if you can..

DSC08657   DSC08860

All in all, it is a great place to kill a few hours, let your inner kid go, and have fun with your kiddies. I had a lot of fun with my daughter.

DSC08865

Prices are: RM80 for Sanrio Hello Kitty Town or RM117 for both Sanrio Hello Kitty Town and the Little Big Club (non Malaysians)
RM59 for Sanrio Hello Kitty Town or RM91 for both Sanrio Hello Kitty Town and the Little Big Club (Malaysians with My Kad)
(all tickets inclusive of GST)

Last but not least, check out the gift shop… filled with original Sanrio merchandise… which are just soooo cute and precious…

Thank you Themed Attractions and Resorts Sdn Bhd / Puteri Harbour Theme Park for having me….

My stay at the Mutiara Hotel Johor Bahru was also inclusive of complimentary breakfast for two adults and since I had my little girl along, I had to pay an additional RM25 for her breakfast which was pretty much quite worth it.

The Mutiara Hotel Johor Bahru does seem a little run down on the exterior, but inside, the luxurious 5 star facilities still ensure guests have a relaxing and comfortable stay.

There are a few section of places to eat, unwind and indulge here. The Seri Mutiara Restaurant which is a 24 hours restaurant at the Mutiara Hotel Johor Bahru is located at the lobby area offers local and continental fare serve ala carte of buffet for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

My husband, daughter and I indulged ourselves in a home-made pizza and spaghetti because it was pouring cats and dogs and we could not go out on the evening we stayed there. We were also serenaded by the guest singer there… while the rained poured on outside the hotel.

I understand there is also a Meisan Szechuan Restaurant in Mutiara Hotel Johor Bahru. serving the finest Szechuan cuisine and seafood here.

Dora and Friends : Into the City

My daughter is now 11 years old… she grew up fed on a diet of Playhouse Disney and Nickelodeon’s Dora the Explorer and so on. So when I learnt about Dora and Friends: Into the City and told her about it, she was so excited about it. And why not, she grew up with Dora and now Dora is also growing up with her !! I am sure many parents can relate. I for one love the new illustrations which are so vibrant and pretty cute… anyway, read on for more about it….

Dora

Dora’s growing up! She’s moved to a beautiful metropolis by the sea called Playa Verde, entered a diverse new school, and is busier than ever. She’s also found a new group of friends with a shared passion for learning and exploring, who join her on new pop/rock-infused adventures in the city.

But this is no ordinary city. Down side streets, in the park and even under the school, there are portals to magical worlds filled with surprises, obstacles and villains, all waiting to test our friends. Armed with an ancient magical charm bracelet, a trusted Map App and the strength that comes from working with bright, funny, and loving friends, Dora invites preschoolers to join her in saving the day, solving problems, speaking a second language, and giving back to the community.

dora1

In each episode, Dora and her friends are faced with finding solutions to problems in their community. They set off into the city where they enter a magical world and face certain challenges that up the stakes and add jeopardy and adventure.

More cinematic and musical than Dora the Explorer stories, it builds on our tradition of using magical realism and offers us more opportunities to feature Latin American culture in a meaningful way.

The show premiered on Nickelodeon on Monday (10.00am), 16 March and will be premiering on Nickelodeon Jr. on Monday (11.35am), 23 March, so don’t miss out on it…

“DOGGIE DAY ”
While trying to shoot a video to help her friend Alana promote the animal shelter’s Doggie Adoption Day, Dora’s video camera mysteriously becomes enchanted. When she points her magic camera at one of the shelter’s dogs, Cusco, he breaks out into song about being separated from his brothers. Dora and Pablo head out to help Cusco reunite with his family.

“WE SAVE A PIRATE SHIP”
Dora and her friends are at a Pirate Festival to celebrate the restoration of the city’s ancient seaside fort. Dora promises a little boy named Jorge that he can steer the festival’s pirate ship ride. But when the pirate ship ride doesn’t show up, Dora, Kate and Pablo must build their own. They find an enchanted ship’s wheel that takes them to a talking pirate ship with secret treasures.

“THE ROYAL BALL”
Dora and her friends are having a Royal Ball in honour of all the kids who helped clean up the city park. But there was a mix-up at the post office, and the package of royal dresses for the kids isn’t coming today! Dora and Alana head to the costume shop to get dresses, and find a golden gift box with a beautiful royal dress that comes to life and tells them that the dress is for the princess — it’s his job to get it to her!

“THE MAGIC RING”
Dora and Naiya are helping out at storytime with the younger kids at school when Pablo discovers a mysterious ring that shrinks him. Dora and Naiya search through the library and find the secret of the ring, discovering that it’s been stolen and lost by an evil wizard from long ago. The only way the spell can be broken is by putting the ring back n the owner’s finger – an ancient princess.

“DANCE PARTY ”
Dora and her friends are putting on a dance party to raise money for the town’s new dance school. Alana, Pablo and Dora are magically transported to the land of Baila via a mirror ball. They meet a girl named Celia, who explains to them that her overprotective father, the mayor, has outlawed dancing after she stubbed her toe at her first dance. Celia needs Dora and her friends’ help to convince the mayor that dancing is safe and fun.

About DORA
Dora is a natural leader and problem-solver who takes on challenges with enthusiasm and confidence, using each one as an opportunity to discover new things about her city and her friends.

Loyal and loving, Dora will go to great lengths to help her friends. A musician, singer, athlete, and devoted student, Dora finds many ways to take advantage of living in a bustling city, and many ways to give back to her community. She lives in an apartment with her parents, her twin siblings, and her dog Perrito, while her Abuela lives in an apartment upstairs. Dora is an active girl, fluent in both Spanish and English, and ready for any adventures that come her way

Fátima Ptacek, 14, is the voice of Dora in Dora and Friends: Into the City! and the Emmy Award-winning series Dora the Explorer. She has been the voice of Dora since November 2010, and received NAACP Award and Imagen Award nominations for her work. She is also known for her lead role in the Academy Award-winning 2012 short film Curfew.

About PABLO
Dora’s classmate Pablo is one of her best friends in the city. He’s energetic, playful, and smart, and always comes up with ingenious ways to solve problems – though he often finds the solution by accident!

A natural athlete, he’s on many of sporting teams, so he’s always on-the-go. Easily excitable and often distracted, Pablo can push Dora and the other girls’ buttons – but there’s no better friend. Like Dora, he’s a born explorer; they share a curiosity and interest in all the city has to offer. Pablo is fluent in both English and Spanish.

Eduardo Aristizabal, 13, is the voice of Pablo. An actor and singer, Aristizabal is currently in middle school where his favourite subjects are science, physical education, reading and band. He enjoys playing golf, soccer and basketball. Aristizabal has been featured in Nickelodeon’s Go, Diego, Go! and many radio, print and TV commercials.

About NAIYA
Perhaps the smartest girl in school and particularly adept at solving puzzles, Naiya excels at maths and
science, and has a true passion for studying the stars.

Naiya is very proud of her indigenous heritage and is an expert in its history and traditions. Some may see her as shy, but Dora sees her as someone with a quick wit, a sly sense of humour and an intense
interest in the natural world. She’s very literal, analytical and gifted in languages, being fluent in English, Spanish and French – and she wants to learn more!

Alexandria Suarez, 15, is the voice of Naiya. At age six, she was cast as Backpack on Dora the Explorer, a show she grew up watching. Suarez has appeared on TV shows including Blue Bloods, Saturday Night Live and Law & Order, and has had leading roles in award-winning short films. She also co-hosted a web series and has been featured in radio and television commercials.

About EMMA
An accomplished musician, with the drive to be the best, Emma is the star of the school band, and for good reason!

Emma is a dedicated musician, practicing her violin for hours every day, as well as playing guitar and piano. Between her music and her studies, Emma hasn’t made much time for a social life, but Dora appreciates how hard she works and how helpful she is to the younger musicians in the elementary band. Emma is a bit more conservative than the rest of Dora’s friends. She tends to be serious, but
shines the brightest when she takes the stage to play with the band. Emma speaks both English and Spanish.

Kayta Thomas, 13, is the voice of Emma. Thomas is a busy young actress who lives in Valley Stream, New York. She is a featured dancer in The Gloria Eve Dance Company in New York where she recently performed in productions of The Lion King and The Little Mermaid. Thomas also recently played the Narrator in her school’s production of The Little Gingerbread Boy.

About KATE
With a flair for the dramatic and the heart of an artist, Kate is known throughout the school for her colourful personality. A voracious reader with a vivid imagination, Kate enjoys trading books with Dora.

She loves writing plays for the neighbourhood kids and dressing up in dramatic outfits, inspired by a book she is reading or a story she is writing. Kate speaks both English and Spanish.

Isabela Moner, 13, is the voice of Kate. Moner is highly regarded for her talents as a singer, actress, dancer and songwriter. Originally from Cleveland, Ohio, she made her debut on Broadway with the revival of Evita at age 10. That same year, Moner made her national and international television debut as a singer in The Next Big Thing New York. She earned her first lead role in the critically acclaimed film The House that Jack Built, and finished that year joining the Tony Award-winning team of the new musical Fly, in the lead role of Wendy.

About ALANA
Athletic, confident and a great soccer player, Alana is clearly a popular kid at her school, but she’s also very nice and goes out of her way to welcome any newcomers.

Alana coaches a kids soccer team, volunteers at the local animal adoption clinic and is a gourmet chef in the making! She speaks both English and Spanish.

Ashley Earnest, 14, is the voice of Alana. She was born in Washington, D.C., into a family of five children, one of which is her fraternal twin. Earnest began modelling and acting at the age of nine, appearing in numerous television commercials. She lent her voice to the 2014 Academy Award-nominated film Ernest and Celestine, portraying the precocious Antoinette. Earnest has walked the runway for Mercedes Benz Fashion Week in New York, as well as other fashion shows. She is fluent in three languages, has visited over 30 countries and summited Kilimanjaro.

Protecting your family from germs and bacteria

Though not visible to the naked eye, germs and bacteria still widespread and can be transmitted through contact. It is important to inculcate the healthy habit of personal hygiene with your family members especially kids, which includes hand washing and bathing with soap in order to stay ahead of germ protection and ensuring the best health for the family.

When my youngest daughter does nothing much during school holidays she is bound to be rolling around on the carpet, watching TV, playing with her tablet and cuddling with our pet cat, Muezza.
According to a research by Philip Tierno, Jr., Ph.D. a New York University Langone Medical Centre microbiologist and immunologist, our carpet is extremely filthy. There is approximately 200,000 bacteria per square inch, which is about 4,000 times more bacteria then you can find in your toilet!!!

Ugg….. gross… what can we do to counter that? For me, I use Lifebuoy Total 10 Body Wash for my family, especially my little girl.
Lifebuoy Total 10 Body Wash contains Active5 along with active thymol, known for its powerful, natural antiseptic properties. The rich, creamy foam reaches deep into our skin pores, deeply cleanses and removes germs, leaving our skin feeling cleansed and refreshed.

The smell is especially fresh and my little girl loves the scent .  Isn’t that just great…  and the price?
Absolutely affordable and reasonable…. 500ml for RM10.90 and 1000ml for RM19.90

I can confidently say that my family is protected with Lifebuoy. With the right superior germ protection on the go, all Malaysian families can constantly stay protected anytime, anywhere.

Advanced Lifebuoy soap is lab-proven for long lasting germ protection, now in an improved formulation with Active5, an intelligent selection of germ-protection agents. Lifebuoy provides you
and your family germ protection even hours after bath.

Other Lifebuoy products I like….

Lifebuoy Total 10 Hand Wash contains active thymol, commonly used by the ancient Greeks to ward off infectious diseases. Thymol has been used in medicine for many years due to its anti-infectious
properties and its pure oil format is good for warding off colds. The special formula is proven to kill 99.9% of harmful germs in just 10 seconds while advanced ingredients care for skin.
Retail price: 200ml for RM6.50

The rich, creamy lather of Lifebuoy Bar soap leaves you fresh and clean, while the advanced formulation cares for your skin.
Retail price: 80g (x3 bars) for RM4.80 and 115 (x3 bars) for RM6.10
